Nine Years

Scott and I are celebrating our ninth wedding anniversary today!

I love you and just want you to know that I'm most definitely the lucky one.

We've faced a lot in our first nine years, and by God's grace and help, have grown stronger and closer to Him and to each other. I'm so thankful to God for His blessings on us and our marriage.

Happy anniversary!

Weight Loss Plan

Scott decided a few months ago that his weight was up too high and he needed to get serious about losing. Now that I've had Little Boy, I'm also thinking about weight loss.

But we both have had a really tough time resisting those late-night, celebrate-because-the-kids-are-in-bed snacks. I'm especially fond of ice cream after 8pm, and have been telling myself it's ok because I buy light or slow-churned. But then I have been pouring on the caramel sauce and the whipped cream (real whipped cream, not whipped topping) and transforming my lite treat into these fabulous but very not-diet-friendly sundaes.

So about 2 weeks ago, we were talking about the new season of "The Biggest Loser" and I suggested that we compete with each other to see who could lose 20 pounds the fastest. I normally would never have agreed because he always loses weight faster than I do. But right now, I'm breastfeeding and my weight comes off really easily when I breastfeed. I have 20 pounds to lose to get to my pre-pregnancy weight, but I need motivation.

So we agreed. And it's actually helping. Scott is amazingly self-disciplined when he decides to be. Seeing him chose to snack on apples and plums and refusing dessert and cutting sugar out of his coffee helps me make better choices too. (Of course, when one of us cheats, the other one could feel permission to cheat too...not that I'm admitting to anything!)

Scott has lost at least 6 pounds so far... probably more. I haven't lost as much.

But all that changed Thursday. I caught what Little Girl has been battling for over a week. A nasty stomach virus. Everything I've eaten has gone right through me. Talk about jump-starting weight-loss!

Yesterday I went to the doctor because I could tell that I was having trouble staying hydrated because of the extra strain breastfeeding puts on my body. When I pumped yesterday morning, I could see a huge difference in the quality of my milk.

He agreed that I had to do something right away to stop the water loss and diarrhea. He recommended a wonder-drug called "Imodium AD." It worked pretty much instantly, stopping the horrible cramping I had every time I tried to eat or drink anything.

The bad news it that this could last a week. Other adults I've heard from who had this said it took them a week to get over it. I'm praying that I heal up faster, and that Scott doesn't get it, because we have reservations at a hotel for 2 nights next week... and the kids are going to his parents!

Today, so far, I have been without a fever and have been able to eat. Now, whether my body is well enough to absorb any nutrients from my food remains to be seen. But I can guarantee I'm winning the weight loss competition right now! (Scott claims my gains will be wiped out as soon as I get better. We'll see!)

Milestones for All

1. Little Girl finally successfully used the toilet! Only once so far, but it's a start. It took so long I was beginning to think I'm just the world's worst potty-trainer. I might still be, or maybe it's just tougher with more kids distracting you from the task...

2. Big Boy is taking showers now, instead of baths, and pretty much can do everything himself.

He is also doing much better in the toilet-training department. We finally got a new procedure down, which is working much better. He's also stopped having accidents at night. Our water bill and washing machine will be very thankful to get a break... if Little Girl would stop picking up the slack!

3. Elli will be off two medicines tomorrow! She currently takes 7 a day, so dropping two is a big deal. We just finished weaning off her seizure medicine -- it's been a months-long process but we're finally there. I can't express how much I have longed for the day she would finally be off that med -- I've hated every second since August 2004 when she first went on it. And tomorrow morning she's having a procedure on her saliva glands that will hopefully control the fluids in her mouth better than the medicine she's currently taking. The medicine has stopped working, even though she takes it 3 times a day. I can't wait to drop that one off the schedule too.

4. I've arrived at biweekly OB appointments. Six weeks to go, if we stick with our plan to induce during the 38th week. I'm having another fetal fibronectin test this afternoon though -- we don't really think I'm in a preterm labor pattern, but there's enough going on that everyone agreed it would be good to check. I had a lot of contraction activity yesterday, so I'll be glad to get this test result.

5. Scott is actively working to lose weight. I'm glad for him and totally support it, but on the other hand, I'm getting weighed every 2 weeks and the numbers are staggering. I've officially gained 25 pounds now. So when I'm feeling particularly cranky, sore, and clumsy, hearing him talk about how much he's lost is a bit ... irritating. Far be it from me to throw cold water on his efforts... it's just amazing to me how this has happened every pregnancy! I keep reminding myself that I'll get my chance to celebrate in 6 weeks when I lose 15 pounds in one day.

My First Post!

Welcome to our blog!

We created this spot to allow us to dialog with friends, family, and whoever else may come wandering by, about the issues we're thinking about. As a stay-at-home mother of three (so far), a job that I really do love, I still feel the need for some intellectual stimulation and an outlet for writing. I have always been a writer but have found it very difficult to make time for it lately. I'm hoping having a blog to keep up will help me carve out time to do some regular writing. I'm hoping to post from guest authors occasionally (consider this an invitation, as long as you are writing thoughtfully and not polemically). (Is polemically a word? Sure it is... at least in this world!) I welcome your comments and thoughts and hopefully we'll keep up with this!

So, here are some topics I'm mulling in my head to write about soon. If you have any input or credible sources on any of them, let me know.

- Evidence-based practice (this is a big new push at my children's hospital and I'm not sure I like it -- need to research it)
- Election. Did Jesus die for everyone or just the elect? Here's a link to get YOUR thoughts going. http://www.desiringgod.org/library/sermons/96/052696.html
- Can a godly Christian woman also be a feminist? Guess it depends on how you define "godly," "Christian," and "feminist."
- Home-school pros and cons for special needs kids
- Helping my kids prepare for the increasingly hostile world
- What's the best way to keep on top of housework and laundry?
- How on earth do you do the coupon thing?
- Martha or Mary: Work (that needs to be done for all of us) or Recreation (quality time with the ones I love)?
- Creating a NY Yankees logo pattern for a knitted hat from scratch

Hope to hear from you soon!
