Anna was an angel. All the little girls wanted to hold the doll playing Baby Jesus, but fortunately they managed to share during the actual performance when an angel grabbed the baby from Mary!
Sam decided back in September that he wanted to be a donkey. Then, he woke up from his nap this day out of sorts and told me he didn't like the donkey ears, they looked like rat ears, and he wanted to be a shepherd now! I showed him pictures of donkeys and their ears and told him that his choice was to be a donkey or to sit with Gramma and Grampa. He came around after a few more minutes! (I'm rather proud of my donkey ears actually -- it was a rather miraculous to find gray foam in my house in just enough quantity to make two ears, and they stood up beautifully.)
Joseph, the sheep, and the donkey are supposed to be doing hand motions with the song "Away in a Manger" but all three boys must have agreed earlier that this was not a good idea. They sang, but remained in character.
