There's something about the marriage of cake, custard, and semi-sweet chocolate that really does it for me!
He made it all by himself, without any help. Well, unless you count finding the recipe for him, showing him where to find corn starch, and explaining what baking chocolate is.
He went to the store, bought the ingredients he needed, found the cake pan, and made it all without any assistance. In fact, I was gone without my cell phone for most of the time he was baking!
Elli has been doing her best to make it a good birthday, too. I took her to a doctor's appointment this morning, the one I was a week early for last Monday, and I didn't have to take any other kids with me!
Anyway, Elli took it upon herself to tell everyone she met that it was mom's birthday, so I've been wished a happy birthday by more strangers than ever before in my life.
The appointment went well. The doctor was very nice and actually expressed to me his philosophy that caring for Elli is a team effort. He can't do it alone, and neither can I, so we need to work together to find a workable solution for her. I really liked him and I really liked his staff. I also liked not having to drive downtown to the main hospital.
To top it all off, one of his nurses actually waited with Elli at the entrance while I went to get the van. And I was able to make her follow-up appointment for another day Scott has off, so I can go with just Elli again.
The weather has finally broken here. The ice is falling off the trees and buildings, snow is melting everywhere, and the sunshine and mid-thirty-degree temps feel SO warm.
I've been reading gardening magazines and books and daydreaming about spring, even though my back won't be in any shape to dig up much of a garden. I should think about building a raised bed so I don't have to dig out any grass...just dump a couple cubic yards of topsoil in a box. If I make it tall enough Elli could reach the plants fairly easily. Hmmm. These are great daydreams for wintry days.
