The Flu Got Me

After two weeks of nursing family through the stomach flu and diarrhea, I finally fell ill myself Saturday. The good news is that I didn't get it nearly as bad as Scott and my sister did. I had pretty bad abdominal cramps for about 45 minutes on Saturday afternoon, and then I felt fine. That was good since we had Elli's birthday party that evening.

We had a great time, and Elli was SO excited to have everyone here, eat her Dora birthday cake, and open presents. She got lots of Dora clothes and toys, a new book, the Songs from the Neighborhood CD (tribute to Mr. Rogers), and two new Powertouch books (the Powertouch book is like LeapPad, except you don't have to hold a stylus - you just touch with your hands. Elli can do this by herself, which makes it a great toy for her.)

I thought maybe that would be the end of the bug, until I woke up 3am (Sam clambered into our bed - we're going to have put a stop to that soon! A couple times I woke up to find Sam using my back as a pillow - quite a unique experience). I immediately knew that all was not well in my digestive tract. I never threw up, but there were episodes in which I thought maybe if I could, I'd finally feel better.

I stayed home from church Sunday morning. I felt spacey and out of it and while I managed to help Scott get the kids dressed so he could get out the door in time, I was feverish. Sam was acting fine one minute and irritable the next, but I really really did not want him to stay home. He has been ultra-clingy through this whole thing, and I knew I wouldn't be able to crash like I wanted to if he stayed home. But he had another episode of diarrhea during breakfast so we agreed that he needed to stay home. I did get a shower and a nap while he watched Cinderella, and then we both fell asleep in my bed for about an hour before everyone came home.

I had chills and fever throughout the day, and spent most of the afternoon in bed, watching the Food Network (I told you I didn't get as bad as Scott did - he couldn't stand cooking shows when he was sick!) and sleeping. Sam showed up in my room around 4pm saying he needed my help going potty. I could barely get out of bed, but he insisted that Daddy was busy feeding Elli and he needed me. I convinced him to use my bathroom and I'd get out of bed if needed.

Boy did he need it. That was the last thing I needed to smell and see at that point, so I was really upset. I actually threw out the underwear - I knew immediately that I was willing to pay $5 for a new package of underwear to toss that reaking sludge in the dumpster and not see or smell it a moment longer.

On my way to the trash, I found Scott on the computer. Not feeding Elli. But instead of realizing that Sam had lied to get my help (isn't it weird how kids decide only one person can do a certain thing?), I made a snotty comment to Scott about being too busy to help Sam. He had no idea what I was talking about because Sam had never sought him out to begin with. He took over and sent me back to bed. I was feeling too awful to deal with the lying then, but we're definitely going to have to address this soon.

I finally got brave enough to take some ibuprofen about 5pm. That sat well and I actually felt well enough to get up and join the family for dinner. I think the kids were very relieved to see me. I ate a little bit and then spent the rest of night in bed with my knitting, watching the Oscars.

Knitting Update

I did feel well enough to cast on for my Jaywalker socks! I'm using my birthday yarn, which you can see in this entry. I don't have enough to photograph yet - I've probably got half an inch of the ribbing done at the top. I neglected to note that the pattern calls for 5 size 1 dpns - the set I got has only 4. But I'm using a stitch marker and using the 4 I have. Hopefully that will work. I am guessing I could use a size 2 as a stitch holder if I get to the point where I need to have 5 needles going.

I also worked a bit of the neck shaping on the right front of my baby cardigan on Friday night. I wasn't up to cabling and reading a pattern last night, so I let that sit. This is why people have multiple projects going!

Weird Dream of the Week

Perhaps induced by my fever, I dreamed that my parents, after leaving the birthday party Saturday night, drove all the way home (3 hours) and then back to return Paulie, the dalmation Scott and I owned for the first 6 years of our marriage, to us. I could not figure out why they would do that much driving, and through the night, and why they were bringing him to us! Paulie is living with a family in the same town that Scott's parents live in, and as far as we know, things are going fine. But in my dream, things hadn't worked out, and there he was, running through our house, claws clicking on the floors and fur flying everywhere. And my parents and sister were crashing on the floor in the kids' room (which was completely empty - no kids, no furniture, nothing) to get some sleep. And I had no idea what we were going to do with him - we had no crate or dog bed or food or leash or anything. What a relief to wake up, even if I did discover I was sick when I awoke!
