The BRAT Diet

Bananas
Rice
Applesauce
Toast

Veteran moms will recognize this immediately and groan with me.

For the lucky uninitiated, doctors recommend these foods in the treatment of diarrhea.

Yes, folks, I am not out of the stomach flu woods yet, as evidenced by Sam's pull-up this morning. Nearly a week later, the flu dragon has reared its ugly head again, proving he is part possum and skilled at playing dead. Unfortunately, I used up all my bananas yesterday. The kids aren't really crazy about rice. So looks like I'll be toasting a lot of bread, and if I run out of store-bought applesauce, making my own. At least until Scott can bring home a fresh supply of nature's perfect fruit.

I actually listened to my mother's instinct last night and kept the kids home from prayer meeting. (I wrote yesterday that he had two BM accidents in the previous 24 hours, which is WAY out of character for him. That put me on notice that something might be up.) When he woke up this morning, Sam kept telling me that his bottom hurt. But he couldn't really explain further, so I just kept him in pjs and waited. I let the kids watch PBS while I grabbed a shower. (I planned to take it at 6:30 this morning when I got up, but Scott was doing dishes so I knew there would be no hot water left at that time.)

I emerged from my shower to a horrible smell pervading the entire house. I quickly determined that it did not emanate from Anna or Elli. That left Sam. He was a mess, but at least he was still wearing his overnight pullup. I didn't have to rinse out underwear (gag) - I could just throw the whole stinky mess into the outside trash. We've made three runs to the toilet since then, so I think it's going to be a long day. Good thing I have a good supply of Febreze and bleach!

I'm really working hard not to be upset about the change to my plans. I had a bunch of errands to run today, plus we had rescheduled Elli's occupational therapy appointment from last week to today. I can't drag all the kids to Children's Hospital with Sam in this condition. So we've cancelled yet another appointment.

At least we have Elli's party supplies already.

Speaking of parties, I wonder if I should find an alternate location for her birthday party? I don't want to postpone it another week - we're getting awfully close to Anna's first birthday now and I really don't think Elli could stand another delay anyway. But if Anna gets sick, or if I finally fall prey to this sneaky flu, we can't safely have people here. I need to have time to disinfect everything too.
