Home Improvement, Part Two

I've got good news and bad news.

Yes, already! I have had a highly productive afternoon!

I put the kids down for naps at 1pm. I followed immediately, sure I'd wake up or be woken up before 2pm. I set my alarm for 2:30 just in case.

Two seconds later (or at least it seemed), my alarm woke me up. I had been sound asleep for 1 1/2 hours. (Why is it that I sleep better in the afternoon than at night?)

Sam heard my alarm and jumped out of bed. He watched outtakes from "Jonah: A Veggie Tales Movie" and cackled while I plugged in the wallpaper steamer.

I had been warned it would take about 20 minutes to heat up enough to create steam. So I decided to see what happened if I picked at the section Anna had already removed.

The whole section of wallpaper came off in one long beautiful flawless sheet.

I burst into a mental rendition of the Hallelujah Chorus as I proceeded to remove the valances and wallpaper from the corner of the room. So much light! The whole room seems brighter with the windows uncovered and the walls white.

As I pulled the section of paper down between the brick fireplace and the window, it suddenly hit me.

That is paper underneath this wallpaper. Plain white paper. They put it up to cover something. I slowly turned to scan the larger section of wall I had done first.

Paneling.

It all made so much sense. The dark wood trim and ceiling beams. The paneling behind the bookshelves and down the stairs to the basement. The wood window frames and black metal when the rest of house uses white.

My best guess is that this is very new wallpaper, hung last year to cover the paneling so the room would look brighter and the house would sell. They used a special paper to cover the paneling, but you can definitely see the seams between each sheet of paper.

So once we get this wallpaper off, we have to figure out how to cover the seams and if we need to do anything else before we paint the paper-covered paneling.

First of many secrets we're about to uncover, I'm sure.
