It is exhilarating to hear the kids piecing wisdom together on their own in a way that is headed in the right direction biblically. Here is one of many conversations I overheard today. Before you read it, ponder this: What do Ephesians 6, Cinderella and invertebrate life cycles all have in common?
Anna: The Bible says to obey your parents.
Sam: Yeah. Because when you obey your parents, you’ll live happily ever after.
Anna: Yeah. And you won’t get any spankings.
Sam: But if you don’t obey, you will die.
Anna: Yeah.
Sam: You know those dead worms all over the driveway?
Anna: Yeah.
Sam: That’s what will happen to you.
As I overheard this conversation between Sam and Anna, I was reminded of how amazing the human brain is. It’s fascinating to hear kids splice experiences together and draw conclusions that pull from completely unrelated schema. What a reminder that we are fearfully and wonderfully made. What a reminder that I have a very important responsibility to help them connect the dots between what we teach them, what others teach them, and what they see and hear everywhere in between.
